Treating Lice

So you may know all about treating lice on your child when they bring the little critters home. But you can be sure that it won't be long before those lice find their way to your head. Lice are extremely contagious, and it's hard to be up close and personal with them, and not get them yourself. When this happens, you'll need to treat yourself for lice; but this is a bit more difficult than treating someone else.

The Pitfalls of Treating Lice In Your Own Hair

  • It can be difficult to treat yourself for lice because one of the most important steps in treating lice is to thoroughly comb your hair, looking for and removing adult lice as well as their eggs.
  • Lice can easily drop down onto clothing while they're being removed and when you're doing it yourself, it's hard to notice this and so you'll just treat some of the lice.

Treating Lice In Your Own Hair

It may be more difficult, but that doesn't mean that treating lice in your own hair can't be done. Here's how to do it.

  • Fill the bathtub with water as hot as you can stand it.
  • Get in and using a wide-toothed comb, brush your hair to detangle it.
  • Shampoo with a natural lice killing shampoo; look for one with non-toxic organic ingredients.
  • Then, using a fine-toothed or metal comb, thoroughly comb hair. You should see lice and eggs dropping down into the water, where they will die from the heat of it.
  • You can then apply any natural remedy for treating lice such as olive oil or tea tree oil; or you can use a medicated scalp treatment.
