Whether your kids are going off to camp in the Summer or starting school in the Fall, it's important to understand that head lice are going to be a threat.
Head lice infestations have become a huge problem for schools and camps. Lice Treatment Center (LTC) has created two new programs for schools and camps to help ensure they remain lice-free environments. LTC's School Lice InsuranceTM program and Camp Lice Insurance program provide periodic head lice checks by trained professional lice checkers using a protocol designed by its co-founder, Dr. Elin Cohen, an experienced pediatrician.
An outbreak of head lice at a school is a very difficult, disruptive and often traumatic situation for students, faculty and administrators. An infestation in just one classroom can consume teaching time and take teachers and staff away from other school responsibilities. Not only that, but infested students usually bring lice and nits home with them, causing disruption and sometimes "panic" at home. Now, many schools throughout the North East, South and Mid-West contract for Lice Treatment Center's School Lice InsuranceTM program. The Lice Insurance program involves sending professional lice checkers to administer lice checks to all students and staff periodically throughout the year. An experienced professional lice checker or lice technician inspects a person's entire scalp and hair section by section, looking for live lice and nits.
Similarly, because Summer campers are living and playing in such close proximity, it is easy for lice to creep from one infested head to another camper's pillow or hair-brush or sports helmet. To prevent the spread of head lice throughout their camps, many camp administrators now contract for LTC's Camp Lice Insurance Program. LTC's camp programs are structured to send several professional lice checkers to a camp periodically throughout the camp season. The first check is almost always held on opening day to check both staff and incoming campers for evidence of head lice. If an infestation is uncovered, the camper or staff member can be treated immediately by one of LTC's professional lice checkers all of whom are trained in a pediatrician-designed lice treatment protocol. Once treated, the camper will be allowed to return to camp. Then, throughout the rest of the summer, the LTC professional lice checkers return to the camp to check new incoming campers or campers ready to leave for home. Most camps want the professional lice checkers to screen campers at the end of a season so they don't go home with any head lice that can be passed on to other family members.
