Nit Removal

You may think once you've gotten rid of the lice on your child's head, your arduous task is over. But it's not. Nit removal is just as important as lice removal because nits hatch and then grow to become adult lice, leaving you to get rid of the lice all over again. Nit removal also takes a lot of patience, but is the only real way to make sure you get rid of lice.

Items Needed for Nit Removal:

  • Nit comb, or a fine-toothed comb
  • Hair conditioner
  • Spray bottle filled with water
  • A small amount of rubbing alcohol

What Do You Need to do For Effective Nit Removal?

There's really only one way to make sure your nit removal efforts are successful - that's to comb them out by hand. Nits are incredibly sturdy, resistant to any insecticides or other lice treatments, and they are covered in a sticky substance that lets them cling incredibly well to hair. Because of this, you need to use the nit comb thoroughly to make sure you've gotten all of the nits out. There are however, a few things you can keep in mind to make this job easier.

  • After shampooing with lice shampoo, thoroughly comb through the hair with the nit comb.
  • After removing nits, place them into a small container filled with rubbing alcohol. When you are finished, flush the rubbing alcohol down the toilet to dispose of it.
  • It's easiest to comb when the hair is wet. If the hair starts to dry, spray it down with water.
  • Leaving hair conditioner on the hair during nit removal can also make it easier to comb them out.
